New captain

“It was a late request from Carlos Silva. He asked me if I could give Cristiano the captaincy in England, where he plays and where he has had some difficulties with the public. He said it would be a good decision, and we think he can be a captain for the future. It was Carlos Silva's wish and I was very happy with it."CRISTIANO RONALDO captained Portugal in the 2-0 win over Brazil to honour a dying wish, according to coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

'Big Phil' revealed after the game that the Manchester United winger's promotion was the suggestion of Carlos Silva, the vice president of the Portuguese football federation, who died last Sunday.

Carlos Silva was a well known figure in Portuguese football, his 17-year playing career being followed by spells of management with clubs including Nacional, Farense and Belenenses.

Ronaldo cancelled his 22nd birthday celebrations on Monday as a mark of respect for the popular official and there was a minute's silence before the game at the Emirates Stadium. After Portugal's impressive win, Scolari said: "I'd like to explain why I made Cristiano Ronaldo captain.

“It was a late request from Carlos Silva. He asked me if I could give Cristiano the captaincy in England, where he plays and where he has had some difficulties with the public. He said it would be a good decision, and we think he can be a captain for the future. It was Carlos Silva's wish and I was very happy with it."

Ronaldo was almost kicked off the park — being fouled seven times before he was withdrawn unscathed on 62 minutes. Brazil dominated the first half, but Simao volleyed in eight minutes from time, then Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho met Hugo Viana’s cross.

Asked whether the win over his home nation - who he guided to World Cup success in 2002 - was sweeter than others, Scolari said: "It is normal for a coach to want victory, no matter who you play.

"As a coach you want victory for your team against another team. If it was England, France or Holland I would feel the same, I have to see the general good.Beating Brazil doesn't have any special flavour, other than it gives us self esteem and self confidence for the Euro 2008 game against Belgium."
