MU 3 : 1 Manchester City

Goals from Wayne Rooney, Louis Saha and Cristiano Ronaldo enabled Manchester United of victory over their rivals and in the process moved nine points clear at the top of the Premiership.

United were 2-0 up when Hatem Trabelsi's super 20-yard shot on 72 minutes squeezed past Edwin Van der Sar. But Ronaldo eased home fans' nerves by scoring from close-range eight minutes from time when Gary Neville's cross flicked off Dunne.

Rooney had put the hosts in front after five minutes when he slotted past Nicky Weaver from close-range following Ronaldo's centre. City enjoyed a great deal of possession in the first half and won a lot of headers around United's box but failed to test Van der Sar.

Richard Dunne's 30-yard shot never looked like going in, while Micah Richards' header from Joey Barton's corner might have finished in the back of the net had Georgios Samaras not stopped it barely two yards out before turning to shoot wide.

The visitors were made to pay for their miss as United doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Saha's effort crashed in on the underside of the bar following good work from Gabriel Heinze.
