MU 2 : 0 Portsmouth ; Boss hails Cris's wonder free-kick

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Cristiano Ronaldo's free-kick as the best in Premier League history after the Portugal star's double sent Manchester United back to the top of the table. Ronaldo's tally for the season now stands at 27, but manager Fergie claimed last night's second goal - which left David James flat-footed - was better than David Beckham's best efforts in a United shirt.

"No goalkeeper in the world would have stopped it," said Fergie. "It was without doubt the best free-kick I've seen in the Premier League.

"It was a fantastic strike, within two or three inches of the upright. Of the players who have taken free-kicks for us, the likes of Ryan Giggs, David Beckham - he was pretty good - and Eric Cantona, but Cristiano's strike-rate is phenomenal. "It's reward for all the practice he puts in on the training pitch with the other players.

"It is a delight to see them whacking balls out there and it means we can go inside and have a cup of tea." Man of the match Ronaldo admitted the majestic strike was the best of his career.

"I think that has to be the best free-kick I've scored," said the 22-year-old winger.

"When you see the ball hit the back of the net after a free-kick like that, it's a fantastic feeling.

"I'm very proud to be able to help my team by scoring goals like that."

United's win took them back above Arsenal on goal difference at the top of the Premier League table.

And Fergie added: "It's great to be back on top of the league, particularly at such a tricky stage of the season with the Champions League and FA Cup to contend with also. This was a fantastic performance from us, one of the best."
