Cristiano Ronaldo is satisfied with the way he has played since joining Real Madrid last summer.

Expectations could hardly have been higher after the Portugal international moved from Manchester United for a world record-breaking transfer fee of £80million.

Real might finish the season without a major trophy after making a surprise early exit from the UEFA Champions League, while they also trail Barcelona by one point in the Primera Liga with four games to play.

But Ronaldo has reflected with pride on his own personal performances over the course of the campaign, despite spending a period on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

“I am very happy with my season at Real Madrid,” he told the Portuguese press.

“If I had not suffered the injury with a two-month gap this could have been my best year as a professional.

“In a league like Spain it is not easy to start with 20 goals and seven assists.

“After the injury against Marseille I missed 12 matches but with confidence and hard work I have returned to a good level.”

We are still alive

Cristiano Ronaldo talked to several journalists that gathered at a publicity act also attended by Real Madrid Director of Institutional Relations Emilio Butragueño. Champions League:

“Fans and players dream about winning the Champions League. This year’s final isa t the Santiago Bernabeu and it’s a great opportunity for us. Winning the Champions League was the greatest experience of my career and we don’t want to let this opportunity slip through our fingers.”

“All this club talks about is Champions League, Champions League, Champions League, but we shouldn’t because it puts a lot of pressure on the players. It is better to continue doing what we are doing, which is winning games. Good things will happen, but the players don’t need any added pressure. Do you feel like you've got unfinished business with Barcelona for losing against them in the Champions League final?

I've only got unfinished business regarding bills from the water and electric companies... Barcelona play well, but what happened then is now in the past. I'm at a new club now and we have a winning mentality.

Doesn't a winner like yourself ever think about the past?

It happened a long time ago. I have to think about the present and the future. The past is useful to learrn from, but we must always look ahead. We will try to do our best and win. I have no unfinished business with Barcelona.

Is the squad determined to show the world you can play better than Barcelona?

This isn't a Champions League final. It is a regular game worth three points against a good opponent. What if we win on Sunday and lose our next clash? Victory would be pointless then. We have to be regular. It will be hard, I know, and we will face a strong opponent too.

Do you connect well with Benzema?

Very well, but I don't know if I'm going to play yet. I connect well with everyone; Raul, Benzema, Higuain...

Real Madrid always take the pitch with the intention of winning every single game. We must be humble in Barcelona. Our most important match is always our most immediate encounter. We will have to face Racing and Zurich first, so I don’t really like talking about the Clasico at this stage. We must respect our next two opponents as much as we respect Barcelona.

Do you believe the outcome in the Clasico could influence the rest of the season?

It won’t be a decisive match for neither team, but it is obviously important for us to earn a victory at Camp Nou.

On his toughest opponent and Premier League brutality…

‘Ashley Cole. He’s a very tough, tenacious football player. And others don’t miss an opportunity.
‘In England players are constantly tackling. Everyone tries to kick you. But if you’re in good physical shape and quick enough, then you can dodge it.’There are more injuries, blows, tackles and players are more physical. In general, it’s much more of a battle (in England). Referees don’t protect players as much and aren’t always whistling for fouls.

No-one is happy, no-one expected it, the team didn't play well, but the world doesn't end because Madrid lost 4-0. We have to lift ourselves and learn from the defeat. The changing room was very sad after the loss, but little by little the atmosphere is improving.''

Madrid's embarrassment against Alcorcon and their current poor form has heaped pressure on coach Manuel Pellegrini, with sections of the Spanish media suggesting the Chilean could be sacked if the team do not beat Getafe this weekend and AC Milan in the Champions League next week.

When asked about Pellegrini, Ronaldo said in quotes reported by Marca: "I'm happy and when you are happy there is no need to change or talk of others. We have to talk about those who are here, not those who could come.''

Ronaldo, who will also sit out the Getafe and Milan matches, faces another test on his injured ankle next week to see if he might be able to return for the derby with Atletico Madrid or the second leg against Alcorcon.
